Veteran State Trooper passes away at academy

Officials with the West Virginia State Police issued a news release about the unexpected death of First Sergeant Joseph G. Portaro.  He was a 17-year veteran of the State Police and was assigned to the academy in Charleston, WV as the Deputy Director of Training.  He was 50-years-old and  a native of Clarksburg, WV.

According to the release, FSGT Portaro suffered a medical emergency on Monday, March 14, 2016 while participating in a physical fitness training routine near the state police academy grounds.  He was taken to Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston where he was pronounced dead.

FSGT Portaro graduated from WVU in 1987.  He enlisted with the West Virginia State Police on Oct. 26, 1998.  He was assigned to the Kingwood Detachment then transferred as a staff officer at the West Virginia State Police Academy in 2008.
