Virginia Inmate faces additional charges after escaping

According to Virginia State Police, Timothy P. Lowe, 55, of Richlands, Va., is back at the regional jail and now being held on one count of assaulting a corrections officer and one count of escape from custody by force.

Lowe was being transported from the regional jail in Haysi to a medical appointment in Richlands, when the corrections officer pulled over to the side of Route 460 on Thursday, to tend to the inmate. During the course of the momentary stop, Lowe attacked the corrections officer and tried multiple times to take the officer’s issued firearm. During the assault, Lowe fled the scene on foot.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail, and Virginia State Police immediately responded to the area to search for Lowe on land and by air.

Thursday evening, a Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted a man fitting Lowe’s description in the Buchanan County community of Harman. Lowe was taken into custody without further incident.

The corrections officer sought medical treatment for minor injuries sustained in the assault.

The escape and assault on the officer remain under investigation.
