Woman killed on railroad tracks in McDowell County

West Virginia State Troopers are investigating a fatal accident that happened in the Hemp Hill area of McDowell County on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016.  Troopers said Melissa Sue Trent, 32, of McDowell County was killed when she was hit by an oncoming train at around 5:50 p.m.

Investigators said Trent was trespassing on Norfolk Southern railroad tracks near Welch, WV when the accident happened.  She was declared dead at the scene.  Troopers said she was apparently walking on the tracks because it was the easiest way to get from one place to another.

Right now the death does not appear to be suspicious. The accident is under investigation by the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police.
