BIG ISLAND, Va. (AP) – Public safety officials and Georgia-Pacific said a worker was killed in an industrial accident at the paper company’s mill in Big Island.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that first responders were called about 9 p.m. Wednesday. Deputies say the caller reported a man had fallen into a machine.

Zoe Myers, a spokeswoman for Georgia-Pacific, tells The News & Advance and Lynchburg that the incident occurred in an area with a paper pulping machine.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the worker as 44-year-old Robert C. Dameron of Natural Bridge. His body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke.

The Virginia Department of Labor is investigating.

The mill produces container board products for packaging consumer products and has more than 300 employees.
