59 News Reporter Regina Gonzalez is hitting the slopes for this episode of “On the Road with Regina Gonzalez.” But this time, not to snow tube!
Since she has never skied in her entire life, Winterplace Ski Resort Instructor Sandra “Sandy” Knapp took time to give her a private lesson on mountains in Flat Top, teaching her everything a first time skiier should know.
Little to Regina’s knowledge, before even putting on the skis, a lot of equipment goes into bundling up and being fitted, yet comfortable. Plenty of layers and ski boots that are tight and secure at the ankles are recommended.
After getting skis, poles, a mask, and most definitely a helmet, Sandy taught Regina the basics before taking her to the top of a hill.
“We go over balance, going forward and backward,” Knapp said. “You have a lot of the side to side, then there’s the edging. One edge to the middle edges on the skis will take care of your turning.”
Each movement plays a fundamental part in practicing safety and control around other skiiers on the mountain. Even though Regina had a little difficulty with turns and sometimes slid into directions, she was getting quite some speed under the skis and feeling the wind in her face as she glided down the run. It is a feeling that she would love to feel again.
