SINK GROVE, WV (WVNS)– This past week, young girls aged 5 and older learned the basics of horses in a four-day Cowgirl Camp at Heavenly Gaits Therapeutic Riding Center.
After starting riding lessons and getting a big response, Founder Michelle Miller decided it was time to hold a camp. Miller said the girls learned everything, from handling the horses to riding them properly.
“We can get a group together, they can practice team work, they can practice sportsmanship and just really push on that,” Miller said. “And then they can also learn in depth more about the horse and how the horse works how to take care of the horse.”
Calleigh Rudd was one of the girls that attended the Cowgirl Camp, who said creating a friendship with her horse will last a life time.
“I just like it because you get to bond with your horse and get to know your horse better,” Rudd said.
Along with holding Cowgirl Camps, Heavenly Gaits is also in the process of getting certification to be able to help military members and those with special needs with therapeutic riding and their Reining Warriors Veterans Program. Miller said she hopes the Veterans Program will be able to help those that suffer with PTSD and other issues.
“Working with the Veterans, we feel like them coming and learning how to adapt from being in the military back to regular living,” Miller said. “There are not a lot of activities around here for them to do to help with that. We feel like them coming in and partnering with a horse will kind of help to deal with adjusting back in.”
