BECKLEY, WV (WVNS)– Thursday, Sept. 26, Jazz musician Cynthia Sayer stopped by Park Middle School in Beckley to introduce jazz music to the students. Since the age of 13 Sayer has been playing the banjo and performing jazz. She said jazz is a part of history and reflects what out past is about.

“It’s music made up of the melting pot of the people that were here and are here,” Sayer said. “And it’s an important idea to show that all of our individual creativity and skills when we work together we can create something way bigger and better than anyone of us individually.”

Sayer said she loves performing in front of students and teaching them about jazz. She said it is important to keep the performing arts in schools for students.

“It’s so important for emotional, social, intellectual development,” Sayer said. “The arts make us the best people we can be. And self expression and team work and creating ideas it all comes from the arts.”
