Local News

February 16, 2020 9:18 p.m UPDATE: A woman who went missing in Summers County has been found dead.

Deputies confirm Jeanette Shue was found almost one mile down river from her home. They believe she was swept away by high water after she was reported missing to deputies on February 7th.

She was in her 70s with early stage dementia. The case is still under investigation.

February 10, 2020 6:00 p.m UPDATE: HINTON, WV (WVNS) — She last spoke with her daughter at 7:30 p.m Wednesday night. But after she missed a church meeting, her family started to worry.

Jeanette Shue is a woman in her seventies and has early stages of dementia. She was reported missing on Friday, after family members went to her home looking for her.

Sgt. T.J Cochran with the Summers County Sheriff’s Department said the biggest concern is the stream behind her house.

“There’s a good possibility that she possibly went out to check the water levels because that was the night we got a really bad storm and the flooding. There’s a good possibility that she ended up being swept away in the water,” Cochran said.

Her house sits on a stream that empties just feet away into the New River. But with water levels being so high, they cannot search the water just yet.

“It’s just been way too high for us to attempt to put boats in to the river. One of the federal park guys did come back on Saturday and attempt to use a grappling hook to check the small stream next to her house, but was unable to come up with anything that way,” Cochran said.

With more heavy rain in the forecast, search teams will have to wait even longer, to give the family any answers. Deputies still ask the community to keep an eye out for Shue, suspected to be in a blue and white nightgown and black boots.

“We’re staying hopeful that maybe the lady wondered off,” Cochrain said.
