Raleigh County Commission unanimously approves medical marijuana ordinance

Local News

UPDATE: Jan. 14, 2020 7:00 p.m. BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Raleigh County is officially on board with medical cannabis operations in the area.

Tuesday morning, commissioners unanimously voted to allow Medical cannabis organizations to operate in Raleigh County. County administrator, Jeff Miller, said the county is ready.

“Raleigh County is on board for this. I think it will spark interest by those businesses that are looking to get permits that maybe the other counties have not gone forward and have said yes on this, that could possibly look at Raleigh County as being a location for this,” Miller explained.

The ordinance allows medical cannabis growers, processors, dispensaries, and laboratories to operate in the county, in accordance with the WV Medical Cannabis Act. Miller said a vote was not required, but passing the ordinance signifies the county’s reinforcement of the code.

“Its about job creation and growth, economic development within Raleigh County,” said Miller.

The DHHR Office of Medical Cannabis is now accepting permit applications for medical cannabis organizations.

Manager of Coalfield Cannabis in MacArthur, Jennifer Redden, said she wants to transition the industrial hemp store to a medical dispensary. There will be 100 permits issued statewide for distributors, and Redden hopes small businesses will not get lost in the mix.

“With the aspect of filling out the application and whether or not we get picked I don’t know if that ordinance will affect us per say. I hope that it will. But more than anything right now we’re just really happy that the commission is seeing the potential of how it can impact the community,” said Redden.

It could take up to six months for the DHHR to grant the permits.

“Its one of those things where if you know you can help the community, you know you can help the state, you know you can help an individual.. How can you not?” Redden said.

Businesses must submit permit applications by February 18th, 2020. Miller estimates it will be at least a year before we start seeing medical cannabis organizations open their doors in our area.
