At least 7 injured, 17 vehicles involved in I-77 accident

Raleigh County

10 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018 UPDATE:   Paul Seamann with Jan-Care Ambulance said they have 10 ambulances on the scene of a major accident on I-77.  There are at least 17 vehicles involved in the wreck.

According Jan-Care there are also at least seven people injured.  They are being taken to the hospital.  Their names and extent of their injuries have not been released.

Seamann said first responders had a difficult time getting to the scene.

“Semis and vehicles really blocked the roads completely including the medians, and it was very difficult to get our initial ambulances out there.”

West Virginia 511 reports a detour has been set up.  I-77 northbound traffic will use Exit 48 to US-19 to I-79 South to Charleston.

It’s still unclear how long the interstate will remain closed, as crews work to clear the scene. It’s encouraged for drivers to avoid this area and find an alternate route.

Andy Long was stuck in the gridlock. He said at one point the roads become snow covered and visibility was very poor.

“You couldn’t see, I thought someone was going to rear-end somebody. And then I drove a little bit further and this is what was in front of me, two accidents,” said Long.

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Snow and slick conditions have closed down the northbound lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike on Thursday, March 8, 2018.  Several cars slid of the roadway near the North Beckley exit.  That is the same location where an accident occurred earlier on the same day.

According to both northbound lanes were closed at around 4 p.m.  At least two tractor trailers have left the roadway near the overpass.  Emergency responders are on the scene.  Drivers are advised to use caution when traveling in the area or choose a different route.
