The Beckley Police Department took on the Beckley Fire Department for a little friendly competition during a charity softball doubleheader. The game took place Saturday October 27, 2018 at the Linda K. Epling Stadium. The fire department was playing for the Muscular Dystrophy Association while the police department was playing for United Way.

Christinia Cowley works at United Way. She explained what it meant to be chosen by the Beckley Police.

“It’s an honor. I mean there are so many great organizations doing good in our community but to be recognized by as one that their guys and girls chose that they thought would do the best with the money that they can give us is an honor and we are grateful for the donations that we are going to receive from it,” Cowley said.

Cowley also explained how the money raised will benefit the community.

“We will be able to put shoes on the feet of children in need in our 7 county service region including Beckley and Raleigh County. We will be able to help more families keep the power on in their homes and keep the heat going during this winter. So this donation was really going to help a lot of local families,” Cowley said.

Rick Fisher with the Beckley Fire Department said that the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be able to continue research with this money.
