Beckley junior high students have the opportunity to see what a cop does every day on the job. Any rising 6th Grader or middle school student in the area can sign up for the Junior Police Academy, which runs from June 10th through the 14th.

The goal of this program is to give kids a better understanding of what a cop does, as well as have kids see cops in a positive light. Captain Chuck Ragland with Beckley Police Department said kids see cops in a negative way and wants kids in the community to feel more comfortable working with cops.

“And they get scared of us. It’s so important to break that so they’re not as afraid of us. I don’t want a child to be afraid of one of our police officers. I want them to come up and be able to talk to them, ask them questions, and tell them what’s going on so that way we can do our job,” Captain Ragland said.

Applications can be found in these schools as well as the Beckley Police Department.
