When overcoming something as devastating as breast cancer, survivors find strength in numbers.

They come from all walks of life, each with their own story, but they all have one big thing in common.

“I just knew I was going to be fine after I had the biopsy, I was going to be fine, but to my surprise they said ‘Yes you have breast cancer,'” said Rebecca Underwood.

The Women’s and Children’s Department at Raleigh General Hospital hosted the third annual event to lift up breast cancer survivors in the community.

Each woman in this room has fought her own personal battle against breast cancer. Together, they proudly donned pink survivor ribbons and shared their triumphant stories over pink cupcakes and strawberry cake.

“To hear other people’s stories and to meet new friends that have gone through the same thing is empowering,” Underwood said. “It just makes you feel even stronger, that’s what it’s done for me.”

Coordinator, Katana Jackson, said when survivors share their experiences, it not only helps them heal, but offers others hope.

“We have people here who are 17-year survivors, 15-year survivors, and we feel like those stories encourage people who might be new to it,” Jackson said. “So we continue to grow and continue to do it every year and just let people know there’s hope. People are not dying like they used to from this. There’s hope; people are living and they’re living their best life even while they’re going through the treatment for cancer.”

For Underwood and other survivors, events like today show them they are not alone.

“You just feel better after you leave, and I made a new friend! Everybody needs new friends,” said Underwood.
