Thousands of people are evacuating their homes before Hurricane Florence makes landfall.
This influx of drivers created traffic across roadways all over the eastern part of the country. Governor Jim Justice suspended road work on I-77 northbound to help alleviate traffic delays.
All Northbound toll booths will also stay open on the Turnpike.
Evacuee, Kimberly Vap, from Virginia beach, said she hit the road early this morning to beat the traffic.
“We kind of jumped the gun, but we’re glad we did because it’s still going to be pretty significant and we had so much rain there, it’s going to be a lot of flooding and some pretty long power outages,” Vap said.
Justice also issued a blanket special hauling authorization just for overweight and oversized vehicles, and loads delivering relief supplies.
