UPDATE 5/11 6:51 p.m.

It was a tragedy that hit people hard in the town of Sophia.

Chief of the Sophia Volunteer Fire Department, Kenneth Churning, told 59 News he never saw anything like this before.

“You walk into a facility like this bingo hall, and you know all of the patrons and as much as I’ve seen in my life time, there’s nothing that prepares you for that. It was terrible,” Churning said.

Churning also said the incident could have been worse.

“You know you make the best out of a bad situation, had the car entered the building at another five degrees, we would have had ten times the injured and possibly the fatalities,” Churning explained.

Volunteers and crews were clearing up the scene and repairing the building since Thursday night. For now, Attilli said all the community can do is mourn and rebuild.

“I just hope after this situation, they all pull together, stay strong, get through it and I hope we never see anything like this ever again,” Attilli said.
