Man charged with attempted murder following shooting at Raleigh County motel

BEAVER, WV (WVNS) — A man accused of firing a gun at a woman at a motel in Raleigh County is charged with attempted murder. 

Raleigh County Deputies said the suspect is James Dean Prater. The shooting happened at the Patriot Motor Inn, along Ritter Drive in Beaver. 

Court documents state Prater pulled out a gun and told a woman he was “going to kill her.” When she tried to run away, Prater fired the gun toward the victim, but hit a doorway. Deputies said Prater tried to also run from the scene, but deputies were able to catch him.  

Officers said at the scene they found two packages that contained meth- valued around $600. They said they also found scales and bags filled with prescription pills. 

Prater allegedly admitted to firing the gun and told officers he was a drug addict. He is charged with attempted first degree murder, wanton endangerment, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance. His bond is set at $200,000.
