Since mental health is one of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ top priorities, administrators believe it is important for those in community to be knowledgeable on this issue.

The Beckley VA Medical Center hosted their annual Mental Health Summit at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy on August 9. This summit highlighted the recent advancements in veteran care and the different programs the VA provides for veterans.

Director of Mental Health at the VA, Dr. John Kasckow, said not all veterans are involved in the VA Medical Center, so the main goal of this summit is to work closely with local organizations that have veteran outreach.

“The exposure often to combat, the exposure to the IED’s and previous wars in the middle east are really things that increase the risk of mental health,” Kasckow said.

The Mental Health Summit is an event for medical professionals, veterans and their families to seek guidance, free of charge.
