Cigarette Butts can be found littering streets everywhere. A recent article by EcoWatch explained cigarette buttes are the most littered objects across the world.

These little pieces of trash are not only an annoyance, but are hazardous to our health. Lieutenant Chris Graham with the Beckley Fire Department said the chemicals in a cigarette butt can have the ability to start a fire if it ends up in the wrong place.

“A lot of times people will just throw them out at an intersection or up against a building and there’s mulch beds there. And this time of year, when it’s really dry, mulch will catch fire. Sometimes bushes will catch fire or buildings that are next to them on fire. So it’s really important people be sure to put them out and don’t just throw them out of the car as they drive by,” Graham said.

Graham also said he noticed an increase in calls about cigarette butts being the cause of fires.
