High School graduation is the day all seniors look forward to — a chance to celebrate with all their friends and family. But for Woodrow Wilson Senior Gabrielle McMillan, that was not the case.
Her father. Army Major David McMillan, has been in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for the last year. But he coordinated with Woodrow Wilson High School to surprise his daughter for graduation.
“In my head I’m trying to rehearse how she is going to feel,” Major McMillan said. “So I get a little teary eyed. It’s a special moment for us, it’s a big step for her.
Major McMillan said his daughter sent him photos throughout the day in her cap and gown, thinking he was not coming. He said it was all worth it for the moment on stage they will remember forever.
“I didn’t really know if I was dreaming or what and I didn’t even sack anybody’s hand because I was so excited, but I was really happy that he could make it,” Gabrielle said.
Gabrielle’s mom said the surprise plan almost failed.
“It was so very hard. There were several times that I just about let it out of the bag, it was very difficult,” Mrs. McMillan said.
Gabrielle is following in her father’s footsteps joining the Air Force just nine days before graduations. She heads to Lockland Air Force base in August.
