The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority recognized a school for their outstanding recycling program.

Shady Spring Elementary School recycled 1,360 pounds of aluminum cans during the 2017-2018 school year. The school will be receiving a Corporate Green Team Bonus of $1,000.

The elementary school also recycled 23,499 pounds of paper and cardboard. The grand total earned from recycling last school year for Shady Spring Elementary is $1,755.

Custodian at Shady Spring Elementary School, Robert Lahman, said this has been a year’s worth of hard work and commitment.

“It has actually been a long process. We started about eight years ago, and the first couple of years we started the aluminum drive, we were coming in close but we were not winning. About five years ago, we had our first win and we have been growing ever since after that,” Lahman said.

This win was compared to 36 schools in Raleigh County.
