BECKLEY, W. Va. (WVNS) —  Traffic on Interstate 77 ground to a halt Thursday, Mar. 8th, 2018,  and eight people were transported to the hospital.

Tow companies are now dealing with the aftermath. Drivers were stuck for hours in traffic following chaos on Interstate 77. A mix of at least 17 tractor trailers and cars collided, causing both northbound lanes to close for hours.

First responders said  a sudden whiteout which caused slick road conditions is to blame for the chain reaction of car wrecks.

Glen’s Towing Co- Owner, Tedy Gray said the loss of visibility quickly turned into a nightmare for drivers.

“It takes one to start a chain reaction and that’s all it was. The turnpike was so busy, just the one spun out, everyone else started sliding. It turned into chaos,” said Gray.

He explained first responders had just as difficult a time getting to the scene due to the weather.

“It was a little fun getting through there because we were sliding. It’s the same as a vehicle, we slide just as bad.”

The cleanup required such an extensive effort that Glen’s towing was forced to call their Charleston shop to assist in towing vehicles off of the Interstate.
