Scholarship will help future nurses and engineers

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — A local car dealership is helping future nurses and engineers.

L&S Toyota in Beckley presented a 50,000 dollar check to WVU tech Wednesday, October 17 for scholarships within the nursing and engineering programs. They also provided 25,000 dollars to 14 different high schools in 6 counties of Southern West Virginia.

The company has funded this scholarship for the past 5 years. Shawn Ball is the owner of the dealership and enjoys giving this scholarship every year.

“If you come to West Virginia tech, and you want to get a degree as an engineer, or nurse, and you do good and graduate, you get a job afterwards. They are 100 percent placement for both those degrees. And that’s what is important to me,” he said.

Crystal Sheaves is the WVU Tech nursing department chair and her students will be the ones up for the scholarship.

“It really allows them to have the freedom to concentrate on their studies. In some cases it means that they can not have to take a second job to help pay for their education, and they really have a lot more time to focus on their academics and doing well in the program,” she said.

The company also surprised the group with an extra 25,000 dollars for high school students who need Christmas gifts.
