New River Gorge Bridge attracts thousands for Bridge Day

FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WVNS) - Every year, people travel from across the country to watch daredevils jump off one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in West Virigina, the New River Gorge Bridge.

This year, Bridge Day is scheduled for October 20, 2018.

Mandy Wriston is a coordinator for Bridge Day. She explained how big of an impact the day has on people outside of the Mountain State. "I set up my booth and it has a big picture of the bridge, and they don't even get as far as what they name of my booth is. In Pennsylvania, they see our bridge and they know instantly who we are, they know where we are from, and they are like 'oh there's that bridge.'"

The bridge may be a popular tourist site, but what do the locals in West Virginia think of the bridge?

"We love our bridge. We own it, we take ownership it in. It's the one day that it's legal for us to get out there and walk around," Wriston said.

Curtis Paul lives in Fayetteville. He said he loves watching the sunsets and sunrises on the bridge.

"I love the New River Gorge Bridge. I think it's a beautiful sight when you drive across it. I love seeing the Gorge and all the fall when it rolls in," Paul said.

Wriston said that with the bridge being so iconic, it does a lot to help the economy in Southern West Virginia.

"If we have a really good year all of the hotels are completely booked. And on top of that we have people that are in the restaurants, their in our retail stores. They are even in our tourism attractions," Wriston said.
