Fireworks causing headaches for people in Beckley

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) - The Fourth of July may be over, but that is not stopping some people from setting off fireworks.

59 News was told that some people in Beckley were being woken up by fireworks going off between 10 p.m. and midnight every night.

Mayor of Beckley, Rob Rappold, said Beckley Police are doing everything they can to stop it, but they are facing some obstacles.

"We have a couple of things that make it very difficult to enforce the ordinance. A police officer has to actually witness the perpetrator setting the fireworks off," Rappold said.

Rappold also said it does not help that the firework tents in town are now selling fireworks at a discounted prince.

Brenda Baldwin lives in Beckley and said she hears the fireworks go off every night.

"Every night when I get ready to go to bed. 11 o'clock everything breaks loose out there. I hate that," Baldwin said.

Rappold said even though it is not illegal to set fireworks off in the state of West Virginia, people should treat their neighbors like they would want to be treated. He also said if people hear someone setting off fireworks, call 911.
