This weekend may just be your chance to party New Orleans style at a Mardi Gras event that the whole community is invited to.
The New River Gorge Learning Cooperative is having its ninth annual gala. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras on the Gorge. The event will be going on Saturday, March 23 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Smokey’s Steakhouse at Adventures on the Gorge.
There will be live music, food, dancing and gaming. Cocktail attire and festive masks are encouraged, but all attire is welcome.
While this may be a good time, it is also NRGLC’s biggest fundraiser. They rely on this event to help support their academic programs, like Camp Drift-A-Bit. Camp Drift-A-Bit is a new summer program that is open to all youth in Southern West Virginia.
Center Director for NRGLC, Jenny Becksted-Smith, said their motive is to provide an affordable education to students in the area. One that is quite unique and provides students with nature-based learning, mindfulness, social justice and community service.
“We are not interested in being an elite private school only the affluent can come to. We are also a community-minded organization that really focuses on impacting our greater community,” Becksted-Smith said.
