UPDATE: August 12, 2019 6:30 p.m. – A man was gunned down in the middle of the day on Sunday, August 11, 2019. The incident left neighbors concerned for their safety, and investigators searching for answers.
Terri Mitchell said she did not hear the gunshots but she was not surprised when she learned about the shooting. She said the frequent violence on Barber Ave., where her two grandchildren live and play, is unsettling.
“It makes me nervous because of my grandkids and my daughter,” said Mitchell.
Just before 3:30 p.m. Beckley police officers received calls through 911 about a shooting on Barber Ave.
Lt. David Allard, Chief of Detectives with Beckley PD, said, “When officers arrived in the area they were unable to locate anybody, a short time after that they were notified that a victim just came into Raleigh General hospital with a gunshot wound.”
Allard said the victim is recovering but he provided very little information to police, which makes the investigation a lot more difficult.
“We’re going to take every effort that we can to find who is responsible, and hopefully be able to find a way to charge them even without the victim providing information to us,” said Allard. “We do know that people called 911 so we know there are people in the area that saw something happen and we’re hoping that someone will come forward.”
Allard said police see a particularly high amount of violent crime in that area, and the people who live on Barber street said its getting worse.
“It is getting so bad that you can’t really leave your kids outside or let them play outside,” said Mitchell.
Investigators are now counting on witnesses to come forward.
“One shooting leads to another shooting so the quicker we can end the cycle of violence, the better for the community,” Allard said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Beckley police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers of WV.
