CRAB ORCHARD, WV (WVNS) — Members of the Raleigh County board of education held a public auction for Crab Orchard Elementary School and the land surrounding it on Thursday, September 12, 2019.

Potential buyers congregated at the now-empty school, where bids started at $50,000. The highest bidder was local physician and business owner, Barry Vaught, with his winning bid at $315,000.

The nine-acre property includes all the associated buildings and outdoor space. Vaught said he is in the preliminary planning process of converting it to a health facility.

“I’d like to see it become a place where people can come [who are] interested in… improving their lives,” said Vaught. “Learning about wellness and those sorts of activities… and also generate some business in this area.”
