A firefighter in Summers County was charged with embezzling more than $80,000 from a local fire department.

According to court documents, James Eric Jeffries, the Fire Chief and Secretary/Treasurer of the Jumping Branch-Nimitz Volunteer Fire Department, was the sole signatory for the fire department’s two checking accounts and was also in possession of the department’s debit cards and online banking activities.

The investigation revealed Jeffries made ATM withdrawals from the fire department’s accounts starting in October 2015 through December 2018. Court documents state Jeffries made more than 300 ATM transactions within local video lottery establishments, totaling to more than $60,000.

Investigators also discovered Jeffries transferred more than $11,000 from the Jumping Branch Nimitz Volunteer Fire Department’s bank account to his personal account. He allegedly made fake accounting ledgers to the West Virginia State Legislature’s Post Audit Division relating to some of the ATM withdrawals.

In total, Jeffries reportedly embezzled around $86,000.
