A federal inmate pleads guilty to weapons charge.

Dave Berrios-Hernandez, 24, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Beckley, entered a guilty plea to possessing a handcrafted weapon, or a “shank” at the prison on September 5, 2017.

“Another inmate with a shank,” said United States Attorney Mike Stuart.  “The result will be another extended prison stay.”

A staff member observed Berrios-Hernandez throw the weapon down.

Berrios-Hernandez faces up to five years in prison, consecutive to the sentence he is now serving, when he is sentenced on February 20, 2019.

Assistant United States Attorney John File is handling the prosecution.  United States District Judge Irene C. Berger presided at the plea hearing.
