Monday, October 25, 2021 6:00 p.m. UPDATE: BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS)–A Bluefield Police officer is placed on administrative leave following a reported fight leading to shots fired. James Mullins was off-duty and was involved in an incident in Bluefield early Sunday morning.

Police responded to a call for shots fired outside Greg’s Sports Bar in Bluefield early Sunday morning. There they found James Mullins, an officer with the Bluefield Police Department, fighting across the street.

Gregory Saunders is the owner of Greg’s Sports Bar. He said right before closing time, Mullins came in and started shouting at two men.

“They have words, then they talk about guns, next thing you know it’s a shootout,” Saunders said.

Bluefield Police Department, Mercer County Sheriffs Department, and State police responded.

“I’ve talked to Chief Dillow and were fully aware of the situation it’s under investigation,” Mercer County Prosecutor Brian Cochran said. “More charges may be pending but we’re going to wait until the investigation is complete.”

Saunders told 59News he is worried that incidents like this will hurt his business.

“When things happen like this, especially with Bluefield Police Department, and you let violent things happen, you don’t do your job then the very first thing that happens is shooting at Greg’s,” Saunders added. “Which hurts me as a businessman because I had no affiliation at all.”

The investigation is ongoing at this time, anyone with information is asked to contact State Police.
