LATEST: Arrest made in Wyoming County axe attack investigation


BAILEYSVILLE, WV (WVNS) — 2:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 2019 UPDATE: An arrest was made in an investigation into a man attacked with an axe in Brenton, WV. Nicky Hatfield, 26, is charged with Malicious Wounding and Battery.

Hatfield is accused of hitting Anthony Lester in the head with the blunt end of an axe on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019. It happened just after 8 p.m.

According to court documents, Hatfield admitted to hitting Lester with the axe. He then threw the weapon into the weeds behind his house. Hatfield told investigators Lester had come to his house with a baseball bat, but another witness said that was not the case. The axe was recovered and officers said there was blood on it.

Lester could not be questioned due to the extent of his injuries. Witnesses said the argument stemmed from an fight that happened earlier in the day.

As of Oct. 1, 2019 the victim was still in the hospital awaiting reconstructive surgery. He was also be treated for a minor brain bleed.

The investigation is still open. Hatfield is being held in the Southern Regional Jail. His bond is set at $10,000 cash only

ORIGINAL STORY: Deputies in Wyoming County are investigating after someone was injured following an incident with an axe.

Deputies said one person was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries Monday, Sept. 30, 2019.

Deputies are still investigating, no arrests have been made at this time.
