LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) — New River Community and Technical College in Lewisburg was bustling with high school students on Sept. 27, 2019.
Seniors from Greenbrier West were on campus to learn about technical skills as an alternative to typical college classes. They learned about everything from EMT skills to welding, and even cosmetology.
This program was meant to introduce students to a different post high school career path because a four-year degree is not the only option for high school graduates. New River CTC Outreach Director, Roger Griffith, said this is a great way for students to get to see a college campus.
“A lot of kids are first generation college students,” Griffith said. “They’re not used to being exposed to being on campus and so if it’s comfortable for them, they’re much more likely to come back.”
This program has been going on for a little over a year, although the collaboration between New River Technical College and Greenbrier County Schools has been around since the late 60s.
