Heart of God Ministries continues back to school tradition

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — The 2019 school year is rapidly approaching. On Saturday, August 3, Heart Of God Ministries held their annual Back to School event at Beckley’s New River Park.

Youth Pastor Tyler Coleman said this is a day for families to come out and enjoy a day full of fun.

“We’re just out here trying to give back to the community… for which we are a part of,” Coleman said. “We operate under the mantra that the church is the community and the community is the church.”

Throughout the day, the church gave away 900 backpacks to students from preschool to college. Coleman said it is great to be able to give back to so many families in need.

“It’s absolutely huge,” Coleman said. “I didn’t realize until I started working with a lot of the kids… that many of our children take for granted some kids struggle to get. It’s a blessing just to be able to give back and serve those families.”

For the 18th straight year, Heart Of God Ministries has been serving the community through this event, hoping to reach just one person.

“I think even then it was just the church wanting to be able to give back and serve the community,” Coleman said. “Dr. Martin Luther King said something that’s very profound: ‘Anyone can be great because anyone can serve.’ And so this is just our opportunity to serve our local community.”
