FAIRLEA, WV (WVNS) — Imagine climbing a ladder 80 feet and jumping head first into a pool of water far below — that is what the high dive show at the State Fair of West Virginia has in store. With its Jungle Island theme, featuring a tiger, zebra and many other favorite animals, it is one of the many free entertainment options at the fair.
Diver Alec Yurchyk said during their daily shows, they perform for the crowd many different types of acrobatic tricks.
“We jump from the different platforms, like 3 meters, 5 meters and 10 meters,” Yurchyk said. “The high dive is around… 80 feet, like 20 meters.”
It may seem crazy to jump 80 feet and dive into a pool, but diver Jaime Arrayave said not to worry. All divers are trained the correct form for each jump.
“We were training in Olympic diving,” Arrayave said. “Some of us quit. Some of us are still in competition. This is what we do during the summertime. It’s a very nice job. We love it and we have a lot of fun with it.”
The divers said their favorite part of the show is feeding off the energy from the crowds and seeing their reactions.
“It’s amazing,” Arrayave said. “I love to see a big crowd. Here, it’s very motivating.”
If you’d like to see them for yourselves on the fairgrounds, the High Dive show performs daily with shows at noon, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
