LATEST: One person dies following chemical plant explosion

BELLE, WV (WOWK/AP) — 12/9/2020 3:00 p.m. UPDATE: Authorities say an explosion and fire at the Chemours plant killed one person while injuring three others.

Representatives with Chemours said the incident occurred at Optima Chemicals, which is a tenant on the property. Four people were reported injured initially, but Kanawha County Commissioner Kent Carper said one person later died.

Belle Mayor David Fletcher, who doubles as a volunteer firefighter, said the fire was put out and an order for residents in the area to remain indoors was lifted early Wednesday.

BELLE, WV (WOWK) — 12/9/2020 3:05 a.m. UPDATE:  The Shelter-in-place has been lifted for the 2 mile radius surrounding the Chemours Plant in Belle as a result of an explosion and fire that occurred at 10:02 p.m. on December 8. Emergency Responders have evaluated the scene and have determined that an all clear can be issued for the incident.

A number of schools in the Kanawha County School district, located in the restricted zone, have already cancelled classes for Wednesday, December 9th.

Those schools include: Belle Elementary School, Chesapeake Elementary School, Carver Career Center, Cedar Grove Middle School, East Bank Middle School, Cedar Grove Elementary school, Du Pont Middle School, Malden Elementary School, Mary Ingles Elementary school, Sharon Dawes Elementary School, Riverside High School, Marmet Elementary School, Midland Trail Elementary School, Pratt Elementary School. Additionally, all Riverside area schools will be closed.


BELLE, WV (WOWK) — 12/8/2020 10:45 a.m. ORIGINAL STORY: Emergency crews are on the scene of an explosion and fire at the Chemours Chemical Plant on West Dupont Ave. in Belle. It is the former DuPont chemical plant.

The call came in around 10 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2020. A shelter in place order has been issued for residents living within two miles of the plant.

Several nearby roads have been closed to traffic.
