UPDATE: Tazewell County deputy killed in early morning wreck

TAZEWELL, Va. (WVNS)– The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office tells 59 News one of their own was killed in an early morning accident in Tazewell County.

On May 1, 2018 part-time Deputy Terry McCann, 45, of Tazewell, Va. was involved in an accident when a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier he was riding in crashed into a tree. Deputy McCann was a passenger in the car. He was later pronounced dead the the Carilion Tazewell Memorial Hospital. 

According to the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, McCann was also a full-time Lieutenant at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.


State Troopers in Virginia are investigating a fatal accident that happened during the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.  The accident happened on Route 604 in Tazewell County at around 2:29 a.m.

According to investigators the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier ran off the road and hit a tree.  The driver and the passenger were able to get out of the vehicle without assistance.  Troopers said the passenger then fell down a hill and was caught in a barbed wire fence.  The driver ran to a nearby home and called for help.

When first responders arrived at the scene they took the driver, who has not been identified, to Tazewell Community Hospital.  He was then flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.  The passenger, Terry McCann, 45, of Tazewell, VA was declared dead at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital.

The investigation is still under way.  The Virginia State Police crash reconstruction team is assisting.  Troopers said charges are expected to be filed in the case.
