MCTEC students make all-natural mosquito repellent

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) — Mosquitoes are a common pest, but a mosquito bite can be more than just an irritation.

Some mosquitoes carry a disease called encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain. There is currently no vaccine for the disease, so the best way to avoid it is to prevent mosquito bites.

A group of seniors from the Mercer County Technical Education Center developed an all-natural mosquito repellent. Hailey Keatley, a student at MCTEC, said this repellent is intended to help prevent the spread of encephalitis.

“When the mosquitoes bite you it can be deadly, so it’s good to keep them away from you,” Keatley said.

The repellent is called ‘EEEk.’ It uses natural ingredients, like witch hazel, to keep mosquitoes away. It does not have an expiration date.
