HOUSTON (CBS46) — A 10-year-old boy was found dead inside a clothes dryer after playing hide-and-seek with his little brother at an apartment complex in Houston, authorities said.

Police are investigating whether Fernando Hernandez Jr. suffocated inside the dryer, located in the communal laundry room of the complex, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Several kids, including Hernandez and his 9-year-old brother, were playing with Nerf guns and hiding throughout the property on Friday. Police said when the other children found Hernandez, he was unresponsive.

The boy’s mother, Christina Rodriguez, said she saw him drinking water about 30 minutes before his body was discovered in the dryer.

“I don’t know what happened,” the tearful mother said. “I was just inside cooking, and my little son came inside and told me my (other) son was dead.”

Rodriguez continued: “My boyfriend picked him up and brought him into the house. He was purple and his eyes were open, and he was gone.”

Paramedics performed CPR before transporting him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s office will determine the cause of death.
