Otter pups take a swim at Columbus Zoo

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Five otter pups born at the Columbus Zoo earlier this year took a little swim Wednesday morning.

The Five Asian small clawed otter pups were born in late January. The pups, three males and two females, were born to first-time parents! The mother, Peanut, was born in 2014 and came to the Columbus Zoo in April of 2017. The father, Gus, was born in 2008 and came to the Columbus Zoo in 2014.

According to the zoo, the pups weigh between 1.2 and 1.4 pounds and are starting swimming lessons with their parents. Before they get into their practice pool, they warm up a little bit by wading in a small orange tub.

The zoo says the otters are currently behind the scenes in their den and will need to be strong swimmers before they are introduced to the larger yard and bigger pool.
