An annual tradition that brings a lot of tourists to Hinton is canceled for 2019.
The New River Train Excursion has traveled from Huntington to Hinton for 52 years, but not this year. According to an article in Trains Magazine, this is is due to Collins P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society’s rising costs.
Hinton City Manager, Chris Meadows, said this is sad news given the impact it has on the city.
“It is one of the biggest fundraisers for the entire community, the train coming through and all the city groups get out there, and they sell their hot dogs and ham sandwhiches and soups and everything else, and they raise money that fund their programs all year,” Meadows said.
Meadows said they plan on continuing the Railroad Days Festival without the train. Hinton’s Railroad Days typically run two weekends in October.
