MABSCOTT, WV (WVNS) — Imagine going to school and not having the correct supplies. For students throughout Southern West Virginia, it is an unfortunate reality.

Cindy Parker, Organizer of Operation Backpack, said the organization started 24 years ago to have the backs of those students.

“Operation Backpack is to help those students in need, that fall through the crack that need our help,” Parker said.

This year, they are giving away at least 1,000 backpacks to local schools to give to students. Each backpack is filled with supplies appropriate for the grade the kid is in.

Parker said if you have a kid who may be in need of school supplies, you can contact their school counselor.

“We do not give them out here individually,” Parker said. “We work with the counselors and the school… They know who needs a backpack and gets them discretely.”
