Rocket Boys Festival held for the last time in Beckley

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS)– Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 was the last day of the Rocket Boys Festival at the Exhibition Coal Mine. Fans were able to get autographs from two of the rocket boys Homer Hickam and Roy Lee.

Director of Parks and Rec in Beckley Leslie Baker said they have been blessed for years to have the rocket boys come to Beckley and give a message of dream big.

“You can aim high and whatever you want to dream,” Baker said. “You know they came from a little coal town in Southern West Virginia and they all became very successful and worked for NASA and had different enterprises, but if you go to school make good grades and really try to go to college and go on your dreams can be realized. And that is the message they have always brought when they are here.”

Baker said while this is the last year they were going out with a bang, they had a rocket launch contest and allowed people to build smaller rockets.
