RAINELLE, WV (WVNS) — 7/8/19 6:20 p.m. UPDATE: The town of Rainelle has a new police chief.

Monday morning, Dean Fankell was sworn in as the head of the Rainelle Police Department. Fankell comes out of retirement from serving as a Greenbrier County Sheriff’s deputy through 2017.

Newly-elected Rainelle Mayor Jason Smith said it was not an easy decision, but with a new administration, it was time for a change.

Fankell said he has several ideas in mind for his department, including no longer serving Rupert and Quinwood, which are both out of the town’s jurisdiction.

J.P. Stevens confirmed to 59 News he is no longer chief of the Rainelle Police Department, citing a letter of notice sent to him by the new mayor and city council. He said the new administration has the right to make those changes.

On Sunday morning, the Town of Rainelle’s Police Department made an announcement of Stevens’ departure on its Facebook page, but the post was later removed.

No word yet on who Stevens’ replacement will be.
