HINTON, WV (WVNS) — Construction on the Bluestone Dam in Summers County is still underway, but engineers told 59News they are close to finishing phase five.
Engineers are currently putting in a temporary cofferdam, which is a metal structure filled in with concrete and gravel. Resident Engineer for the Army Corps Engineers, Paul Carr, said this structure helps divide the dam which is vital for phase six.
“We’ll drain out one side of the stilling base and we’ll dig out all of the rock and excavate it down to a good foundation, and they’ll put concrete back in,” Carr explained.
After this is done, engineers will replace the temporary cofferdam with a concrete training wall that will permanently separate the dam. Once the dam is finished, officials said they will be replacing and upgrading the recreation facilities around the dam for the public to use.
