ROANOKE, Va (WVNS) — The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia will be celebrating its 35th anniversary this weekend.

A special celebration will be held at the house located on South Jefferson Street on Sunday, May 5, 2019. The house first opened on May 5, 1984. Anna Semonco who is the Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia said the celebration begins at 2 p.m. Semonco said there will be a performance by the Roanoke Children’s Choir, games for kids, a quilt auction and much more.

Semonco said over the last 35 years, the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia has provided a “home away from home” for more than 20,000 families while a family member was being treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. ” We want to celebrate the families who have stayed with us and the volunteers who are the heart of the house and keep us going because we are small staffed and we could not run the house without them. It’s just all in all a celebration of 35 years of taking care of the families of sick or injured children who must come to Roanoke to receive medical care,” Semonco said.

If you are unable to attend, but would still like you help, you can buy a ‘Rock A Tee” shirt. Semonco is asking people to wear the shirt on Friday, April 3, 2019 to show their support and to send a picture to Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia on social media. To order a shirt, you should call 540-857- 0770. Their goal is to raise $35,000.
