BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — An accident on Friday where a minor was on a bike without a helmet caused serious injuries.
No matter what if the vehicle is motorized or self-powered, wearing a helmet is important.
West Virginia has a helmet law for motorcycles, stating that a helmet must be warn at all times by the operator and the passenger. For bicyclists, a helmet is optional when over the age of 15.
Skyler Sallee, Manager for United Cycle in Beckley, said helmets are designed to protect your head in any accident.
“It does help in the reduction of injuries,” Sallee said. “Primarily concussions, impact, spinal, skull injuries, to even whiplash, if you wear the right gear.”
Wearing a helmet cannot eliminate all possible injuries, but wearing the right helmet for the activity you’re participating in can reduce your risk of serious injury.
