GHENT, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies have received multiple hoax threats about school shootings or other violent acts on campuses across the state on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

At this time several counties have reported threats including Barbour, Cabell, Harrison, Ohio, Kanawha, Marion, Mercer, Monongalia, Raleigh, Taylor, Wirt, and Wood.

“Each threat is taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. We are one hundred percent committed to continuing to ensure the health, safety and well-being of students and communities. We diligently work across departments and agencies to respond, monitor, and investigate these alleged threats.”

Raleigh County Superintendent of Schools David Price made the following statement.

“There have been numerous 911 calls today throughout the state with threats of active shooters in buildings. These calls appear to be coming from out-of-state numbers with false threats. I want to assure everyone we are working with local law enforcement agencies and taking appropriate steps to ensure all students and staff are safe. Again, it appears these are false threats but we will continue to take them seriously and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

The Wyoming County Board of Education made the following statement, despite no schools in Wyoming county receiving threats yet:

“The WV Department of Education and Homeland Security have made all school systems in WV aware that there is a series of FAKE calls claiming active shooter situations in some WV schools. Again, these calls have been shown as FAKE and are coming to 911 Centers. To this minute we have NOT received a call regarding any Wyoming County School. We are working as a TEAM in WyCo with Emergency Management and Law Enforcement to take every single threat seriously, so if there is a call to our 911, it will be taken seriously and addressed fully. We want to make families aware of this situation so that you have all information. As always, we will do everything in our power to keep our students safe. We cherish our children! Hope they catch these folks making these calls! Thank you all and call your child’s school or the Central office with questions. WyCo together for children.”

The West Virginia Fusion Center, under the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security, is coordinating response efforts at the state level.

All calls so far have been deemed not credible by the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security.
