OAK HILL, W. Va. (WVNS) — Two people from Oak Hill have been arrested and are charged with child abuse resulting in injury after reports of abuse towards a one-year-old, according to investigators.

Oak Hill Police arrested 23-year-old Caleb Scott Kees and 22-year-old Stephony Dominique Burghduff this week.

Police said the incidents date back to October and November of 2017.  According to Detective James Pack, the first incident was reported on October 30, 2017 at a hospital in Oak Hill. Detectives said the child’s mother, Burghduff, brought the child to the hospital after finding bruises on the child.  Child Protective Services was called to the hospital and a report was filed.

The second incident occurred on November 23, 2017. Police said they received a call from EMS in Beckley about a possible child abuse case. When officers arrived to the hospital, doctors told them the one-year-old had a cut on its liver due to blunt force trauma.  The baby was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center due to its injuries.

Later that week, Burghdoff was interviewed by officers with the Oak Hill Police Department.  Documents state Burghdoff told officers she was in the shower when Kees told her the baby fell down the steps.  She said the baby seemed fine so they went along with their day.  The next day, she said she found bruises on the baby’s back that were bigger than the size of a hand. Two days after the fall, she realized the baby’s feet were blue and decided to take the child to the hospital.

Officers interviewed Kees, who also lived in the home.  He reportedly told officers the same story- that the baby had fallen down the steps.

In December, a doctor who specializes in child abuse cases said the child’s bruises are a clear case of child abuse.

Kees and Burghdoff are charged with child abuse resulting in injury.  Burghdoff is in jail on a $25,000 bond.
