LEWISBURG, W. Va. (WVNS) — April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and communities across Greenbrier County have come together to do something special.

Davis Stuart, the Child and Youth Advocacy Center, Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Children’s Home Society placed 180 blue pinwheels in the lawn of the Greenbrier County Courthouse on Monday, April 23, 2018.

Each pinwheel represents four children who have either been abused or neglected in Greenbrier County.

Kimberlin Massie, the Accounting and Development Associate at Davis Stuart, said seeing so many pinwheels representing more than 800 children is a sad reality.

“It’s pretty shocking and eye-opening that there are 180 pinwheels sitting out there, and each one represents four children.  We don’t know the severity of childhood abuse or neglect in Greenbrier County,” Massie said.

On Friday, April 27, 2018, a Memorial Flag Day Ceremony will be held at the Greenbrier County Courthouse beginning at noon.

The ceremony will honor the children lost, and celebrate those dedicated to making a difference in children’s lives in the community.
