Greenbrier County man dies in mining incident

One man is dead following a mining incident in Greenbrier County.

According to the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training, the incident happened Wednesday, October 17, at the Princess Polly Anna & JCT Enterprises LLC, Surface Mine #1.

Roger W. Herndon was reportedly injured during a mining incident and taken to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital due to the injuries he sustained during the incident.

Officials believe the injuries happened when Herndon was struck in the side by a piece of auger drill steel.

Herndon was a 33-year-old auger helper from Rainelle. 

Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice issued a statement offering their condolences 

The incident remains under investigation by the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training.
